Why does the UK still take part in Eurovision?

Eurovision Sound Contest

It’s a question which I ask myself every year that the Eurovision song contest graces our screens, courtesy of the BBC. Every year it was on since I was about 8 or 9 my dad and I always watched it (Because the actual contest always falls on Saturday) and we will probably both end up watching it this year to. But we’d both admit that we watch it for a laugh, because I don’t think anyone in UK takes it seriously any more, and with good reason. Eurovision is no longer about talent, it’s simply political and cheesy.

What do I mean by political? Lets take a couple of countries that are in Eurovision as examples. Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia. If you have a map handy you’ll notice there close or what I’d call next door neighbours, so come voting I wouldn’t be suprised if these countries voted for each other, to make it even more obvious those three countries will probably vote for Russia. Look out for that come results night on Saturday. Everyone knows this voting style occurs, countries which are next to each other usually vote 10, 9 or 8 points. But who’s our next door neighbours, ah yes Ireland… We’re fucked. Besides that we’re a small spec on the world map, and sadly we once had a great British Empire, but like everything in both History and today we fucked that up pretty good too.

Not only is political voting the problem that Eurovision has, but really we have to ask ourselves is Eurovision about talent anymore? Some of the entries that have won in the past years have been so cheesy that even a mouse would take one look and think fuck that, classic example for the 2007 Eurovision song contest these assholes we’re our entry:

Realistically if you live or did live in the UK would you want these people representing your country? I certainly didn’t and it basically confirmed my theory of the British public are retards. Thanks to everyone who voted for these slightly perverted wannabe air hostesses, these people represented the United Kingdom, I hope your proud. The entry is what I call cheesy and cringe worthy, there is no talent here, just two (probably) homosexual guys and four women on stage being slightly perverted and singing na na na na na na na na na na na na yeah yeah yeah yeah for the majority of the song. Oh wait there was the chorus ‘We’re flying the flag for you’ I’d rather your plane crash in the Altantic sea to be honest. But anyway the act was 2007, and since then everything in Britian has seem to just fail, so would you like to fly the flag now scooch?

Enough of that that was the past. Seems I’ve just disgraced my blog with the video above I think, I should give Jade Ewen our 2009 entry, who thankfully is serious and has that word, oh what is it.. It will come to me ah yes, TALENT. (Okay im secretly hoping someone from scooch reads this and im just taking shots on them) but anyway this years entry Jade Ewen:

I think most people would agree that she does have a nice voice, but although the United Kingdom is doomed from the start, we won’t win on the ground of Jade being to serious. Which is a shame because Eurovision boasts about talent, blah blah blah, but what they really want is a act similar to scooch, something thats all cheesy, lots of shite gimmicks etc, and while those types of acts have won Eurovision I think it’s very unfair. Jade bless her is probably very proud representing the United Kingdom and to be honest, I’d glad she’s actually serious about her entry, you can tell by the passion in her voice. But I think her entry just doesn’t class as ‘Eurovision talent’ which is shame because Eurovisions talent is awful. So I hope that after Eurovision Jade gets a record deal, releases some albums and becomes famous.

The UK has won Eurovision a few times, when it was actually a proper contest. But I think it’s way past it’s day and the UK should think about pulling out of it all together. Each year we just watch neighbouring countries vote for each other and see the UK with ‘nil pwa’ or occasically with about 10. Hurray! But seriously, we’re not going to win Eurovision ever again, why bother. Maybe when the BBC stop broadcasting the contest is the day when we save ourselves from embrassment yet again.

Update 16th May 2009:

Well I must admit im very suprised about this years Eurovision results. THE UK CAME 5TH! All I can say is well done Jade! I think this has been the UK’s best result since the 1990′s. Watching the results it got a bit boring after Norway we’re about 100 points clear, but still it was nice to see the UK getting points from all over the place, but what the hell British public, 7 points to Germany?!?!? Seriously, what the hell we’re you thinking!? But well done Portugal for giving us 12 points! But im honestly shocked at how good this Eurovision as been, suprisingly there has been less political voting, and more of voting for talent. Granted Cyprus voted for Greece and a few of the USSR countries voted for Russia, but over all the voting was pretty well balanced. Finally Eurovision is starting to form itself again! I must also point out how good the host of this years Eurovision Moscow put on a good show and some of there interval acts we’re brilliant, especially the act with the suspended water pools above the crowd.

I recently read that the voting system had changed a bit and the public vote counted more, about 50% I think, so hopefully for next years Eurovision, this standard is continued and less political bullshit occurs. Maybe Eurovision is becoming the event it once was, only time will tell. But again well done Jade Ewen!

So to answer the question why does the Uk still take part in Eurovision? Because maybe the UK now has chance again!

Oh, this is hilarious! Definitely got some laughs from this blog and video of Eurovision. Thanks for posting!

Yeah, I don’t really stay up to date on any of the popular shows here in the United States. There is American Idol which is hugely popular but I think the heroes in my mind are the people that perfect their craft and go to school to become musicians.

I like Jade’s voice–she’s got a strong voice and seems to really dive into the music which is what it takes to succeed.

One of my favorite talents is Jane Monheit–check her out if she’s in the UK–she travels quite a bit in Europe. Here’s a video clip:

Ha ha, It was something I’ve always had on my mind each year about Eurovision. I mean don’t get me wrong, it’s fun to watch, but I seriously question the talent in it now. Like I said Eurovision Talent doesn’t represent the talent of Jade and Jane. I did watch the video you linked me to, and she has a brilliant voice!

American Idol is something that Jade Ewen and Jane Monheit, would easily win because there are looking for talent like that.

But yeah our 2007 entry for Eurovision. If the Biritsh public think thats talent, then screw this im leaving the country!

Im not sure if the United States have any rights to the broadcasting of the competition seems it’s European, so im not sure if it’s on your TV, but if you fancy a laugh, look around on YouTube for vids of the results and acts a couple of days from now. If you manage to find a results clip, you’ll understand how predictable the voting is :p
